Borlaug and the Future of the Green Revolution

About the lecturer:
World population is increasing at the rate of one billion people every 14 years. Borlaug recognized the strain that such population numbers places on the food system. The Nobel Peace Prize bestowed on Borlaug in 1970 highlighted the relationship of food and peace. Borlaug spent a lifetime finding ways to encourage more food production via his wheat breeding program and establishing the World Food Prize and the Global Youth Institute. Poverty in the developing world led to numerous food riots as the price of rice increased. Fortunately, we are experiencing a revolution in genetics/genomics that should foster improved crop and livestock production. Traits such as submergence tolerance in rice will be important in flood prone areas, usually farmed by the poorest farmers. The use of biotech varieties continues to increase providing many benefits but also raising several issues.
