The Institute of Nuclear-Agricultural Sciences (INAS) in ZhejiangUniversitywas founded in 1958. Pioneered by Professor Ziyuan Chen recognized Nuclear Agronomist and Academician of theChineseAcademyof Sciences, and based on tremendous efforts of several generations of scientists, INAS is a national leader in the field of Nuclear-Agricultural Sciences. She has successfully achieved the status of the national and provincial key discipline in biophysics and key laboratory in nuclear agricultural sciences of the Chinese Ministry of Agriculture andProvinceofZhejiang. INAS is part of the ZJU post-doctoral training center. She serves as an International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) exemplary training center for nuclear-agricultural science and technology in the Asia-Pacific region, and theIAEA-ZJUCollaboratingCenteron Mutant Germplasm Enhancement and Exploration in Plants. During the past half century, the scientists, staff and students in INAS follow the principle of Nuclear technology-based, multidisciplinary integration; Exploration and innovation to serve agriculture; and Sustainable development and form a tradition of United, innovative, pragmatic, and progressive. Since INAS was authorized to confer Master’s and doctoral degrees in biophysics and in nuclear technology in early 1980s, more than 300 graduate students earned their Ph.D. or M.S. degrees. The institute has won great reputation by receiving over 70 scientific awards, including 6 national and approximately more than 50 ministry/provincial prizes.
The institute presently engages in four main areas of research in biophysics, including environmental biophysics, agricultural biophysics, radiation biophysics, and medical biophysics. In the arena of application of nuclear technology, INAS actively promotes research in application of isotope tracing techniques, mutation genetics and Plant Breeding, molecular radiation biology, and other application of radiation technology.
